Recently, I had in the clinic a bright 17-year-old girl and her parents. “She was a brilliant student in 10th grade,” her parents shared, “but now she’s completely distracted.” Their daughter, once academically strong, was now struggling with focus.

A pattern of concerning behaviours had emerged:

  • Deception: A habit of speaking lies had developed over the past couple of years.
  • Secretive Habits: Hiding junk food wrappers.
  • Bunking: Skipping college and classes.
  • Excessive Screen Time: Continuous phone usage and addiction to social media reels.
  • Sibling Dynamics: Ignoring and dominating her younger sister.

These behaviours, while distressing for parents, were highlighting unmet emotional or developmental needs in the girl.

“Showing trust and confidence in our own children is the most powerful tool for building transparency and connection.”

Our Holistic Approach

My recommendations to the family:

  • Warmth and Connection: Physical affection — hugs and gentle strokes — conveys unconditional love and bridges emotional gaps.
  • Open Communication: Improving dialogue with unwavering attention at home.
  • Physical Activity: Two hours of daily exercise to improve mood and cognitive function.
  • Responsibility: Age-appropriate responsibilities to create a sense of purpose.
  • Unconditional Acceptance: Fostering trust rather than constant criticism.

For the girl herself, I suggested she create her own daily timetable over her own choices — giving her agency and ownership.

In our follow-up session, the mother’s report was heartwarming: “There’s 40% improvement. We are experiencing harmony at home.” The shift in parental approach had already begun to mend the family dynamics.
